Frequently Asked Questions

Collection of garbage carts begins at 7am and is finished by 5pm. Collection day is every Wednesday

There is regular garbage collection on statutory holidays with the exception of December 25 and January 1.

Garbage Cart Tips

1. Cart lids must be closed all the way. If you have extra garbage bags that will not fit into the garbage cart additional tags are available at the Town of Fairview Office.

2. All items in cart are bagged, with no liquids. Loose items may not fall into collection truck and will become litter in your neighborhood. Liquids may leak out of collection truck onto your street.

3. Have your cart out by 7 a.m. Collection begins at 7 a.m. on your collection day, so have your cart to the curb by 7 a.m. or even the night before. Do not assume your cart will be collected at the same time every week, as collection trucks may show up anytime beginning at 7 a.m.

4. One metre clearance on all sides. The most common issue is people placing their garbage cart near a parked vehicle. Make sure that there is nothing for one metre in any direction so that the truck can safely grab and empty your cart. This includes recycling carts and any additional garbage bags. Please be courteous to neighbors and park at least one metre from garbage carts.

5. Garbage carts must be placed on the roadway. They cannot be on a lawn or driveway or they will be refused.

Only Acceptable Waste

Most regular household garbage is acceptable for collection. However, because of landfill restrictions, waste reduction efforts and size and weight restrictions the following materials cannot be collected.

Hazardous or liquid waste should be brought to a facility capable of handling toxic waste. Automobile parts, lumber, animal carcasses, furniture, appliances, dirt and rocks - can be taken directly to the Landfill where disposal fees may apply.

Prepare Pet Waste Properly

Improperly prepared dog and cat waste is a health concern for the garbage collectors. Please be considerate of those who collect your garbage.

Please follow these simple instructions for packaging your pet's waste for disposal.

Mix double bagged pet waste in with your other garbage with as little snow and air as possible. It can be placed in your cart along with your household refuse.
